About SLS Wills and More
I started SLS Wills and More in June 2017 after more than 30 years in private practice (various firms of solicitors in East Kent). I work by myself and my ethos is to provide a friendly caring service in the comfort of my clients own homes, as I found that a lot of clients (particularly those who are most vulnerable) prefer to remain at home as they will be far more comfortable as a solicitors office can provide logistical difficulties, access difficulties and can be overbearing. I like to spend time with my clients in getting to know them and their family details before discussing their requirements as this helps to ensure that the advice I give is tailored to their unique situations – it is not a one size fits all solution!
I started work for NatWest Investments in Kent but was made redundant when the branches closed in 2000. Since then I have worked for different solicitors in East Kent and qualified as an experienced Trust and Estate Practitioner in October 2003 with the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. I fell into legal work by accident or fate if you prefer after I was unable to continue with my studies to become an Accountant. I soon found my calling as I discovered that my accountancy skills that I had acquired would be useful in my career as a lawyer in dealing with clients who were vulnerable to being financially abused, and helping them to protect themselves and their finances. All of this is about ensuring that during their later years, they are protected by the people they trust the most by creating Lasting Powers of Attorney, or if it was too late for that making applications to the Court of Protection to appoint deputies (whether family members or professional deputies), and finally ensuring that their wishes are adhered to by preparing Wills to ensure that their assets pass to the people they wish to benefit.
Most of clients come to me because I have been recommended, and I will talk with anyone over the age of 18 who wishes to utilise my services. There is no age barrier, other than you have to be over the age of 18 to make a Will or Power of Attorney. I hope in time that future generations of my clients will come back to me when they want to consider their own provisions. You do not have to be wealthy to utilise my services. It is important that even if you do not own a house or have much money that you do at least make a Will to leave any young children to someone who can care for them.
I decided to set up as a sole practitioner in 2017 after leaving private practice in order to offer a flexible bespoke service to clients in East Kent, and during my early months I also decided to provide locum services to solicitors as a way of continuing to keep my skills up to date in areas that I am not allowed to offer (as they are restricted activities). This resulted in being offered a permanent 3 day a week contract in Gravesend which I accepted, which gives me the remainder of my time during the working week to concentrate on my own clients who wish to utilise my services.
Throughout my career I have been a longstanding volunteer with St John Ambulance in Kent, mainly as a youth leader training young people in first aid. Over the last 4 years, I have concentrated on Safeguarding within St John Ambulance as the District Safeguarding Officer, which takes me all over the County and to Hastings. As part of my role, I am a registered safeguarding trainer for St John Ambulance, and this fits very nicely into my legal career.
I am happy to provide seminars to business groups or to local community groups about the importance of the services I offer.
Recently I have also been invited to join the Professional Standards Board for the Society of Will Writers, which I have accepted as I am passionate about driving forward standards within the will-writers community to ensure that everyone who uses the services of will-writers can be assured that they are getting the best possible advice from a suitably qualified specialist.
