Marriages, divorces, births, deaths, house moves, business changes, changes in the law: any of these can affect whether your Will still does what you want it to. When a Will should be reviewed.
- Marriage, civil partnership, separation or divorce
- Birth or adoption of a child or grandchild
- Death of a beneficiary, executor or guardian
- House move or significant change in property value
- Business sale, purchase, or change in shareholding
- Significant change in savings, investments or pensions
- Change in family circumstances, including stepfamily relationships
- Changes in the law, particularly Inheritance Tax thresholds
- Routinely, every five years even if nothing obvious has changed
What a Will review covers.
We read the Will against your current circumstances and ask: does it still distribute your estate the way you want it to, are the right executors and guardians named, are there gaps that need to be filled, are there clauses that no longer make sense or that have become tax-inefficient since the law changed.
If the Will is broadly fine but needs small changes, a codicil (a short amending document) can sometimes do the job. If it needs more, a new Will is usually clearer than a series of codicils.
What a Will review costs.
Reviewing any Will written by SLS is free. Reviewing a Will written elsewhere is £75 including VAT, which is credited against the cost of any new Will or codicil if you decide to instruct us to make changes. The review is a half-hour conversation followed by a written summary; you decide what, if anything, to do next.

Yes. The review fee is £75 including VAT, credited against the cost of any new Will or codicil if you decide to instruct us. There is no obligation to do so.
Every five years, or sooner if your circumstances change. Many clients pencil it into their diary alongside other periodic checks; some prefer us to send a reminder.
A codicil is a short legal document that amends an existing Will. It is signed and witnessed in the same way as a Will. Codicils are useful for small changes; for larger changes, a new Will is usually clearer.
