Will writing

Mirror Wills, designed together.

Two Wills with matching provisions, signed separately, fully independent.

Mirror Wills are two Wills with matching provisions, prepared together for a couple. Each spouse leaves their estate to the other, with the same residuary beneficiaries on the second death. Mirror Wills are often used by married couples and civil partners.

Mirror vs Mutual

Mirror Wills, not Mutual Wills.

Mirror Wills should not be confused with Mutual Wills. Mutual Wills are two Wills made together with a binding agreement that neither can be changed unilaterally after the first death. They are problematic in practice, often inflexible, and frequently disputed. We strongly recommend Mirror Wills, which are independent of each other and can be changed by either party at any time.

FAQs

Common questions.

Yes. Mirror Wills are independent. Either partner can change their own Will at any time, with or without the other's knowledge. (Mutual Wills are different and bind the survivor; we do not generally recommend them.)

This is one of the most common reasons people use Property Protection Trusts within Mirror Wills, ensuring that the surviving spouse can continue to live in the family home while protecting children's eventual inheritance. We talk this through during the consultation.
