Grant of Probate
The court document confirming an executor's authority to deal with an estate after the testator's death.
A Grant of Probate is issued by the Probate Registry once the executors have submitted the required application, paid the registry fee, and dealt with any Inheritance Tax due.
The Grant is required by banks, building societies, share registrars and the Land Registry before assets can be released or transferred. For estates with no Will, the equivalent document is Letters of Administration.
