Local context
A coastal town with a strong character.
Deal sits between Sandwich and Dover, with the long stone-and-shingle beach, Deal Castle at one end and Walmer Castle a little further south. The conservation area runs through the town centre, the streets of Georgian and Victorian houses around the seafront and the warren of older lanes north of the High Street. The town has a strong arts and food culture, an active fishing community working off the beach, and a population that mixes long-settled families, retired and downsizing households, second-home owners and a steady inflow of London buyers attracted by the trains from Walmer and Deal stations.
