England and Wales

Estate planning across England and Wales.

Same law, same care, no need to travel. Online consultations have become the way many of our clients prefer to work.

SLS Wills and More works with clients across England and Wales, including London, the Home Counties, the South-East, the Midlands, the South-West, the North, and Wales. Consultations are by video or telephone. Many clients across the country prefer this; it saves them travel, fits more easily around work and family, and produces the same quality of advice and documents.

Why clients choose SLS

Why clients across England and Wales come to us.

Estate planning is the same legal regime across England and Wales (Scotland and Northern Ireland have different systems and we cannot advise on those). Where you live within England and Wales does not change the law; it only changes the logistics. Many clients find that working with a Kent-based firm by video produces a better experience than working with their nearest local firm.

Sara's credentials and experience are unusual. There are an estimated 5,000 estate planning professionals in England and Wales. The number who are full TEPs, Fellows of the Society of Will Writers, tutors at the College of Will Writing, and serving on the SWW Professional Standards Board is in single figures. For clients who care about credentials, this matters.

The way SLS works (slow conversations, plain English, written quotes, ongoing relationships) is what they want from estate planning, not the geographic proximity. Many clients have tried the local route and found it transactional, rushed or unclear.

Working by video saves time. The free initial consultation is the same whether in person or online; the documents are the same; the relationship is the same. Many working clients find online consultations easier to schedule than in-person meetings.

How online consultations work

How an online consultation runs.

A free initial consultation by video or telephone covers exactly the same ground as an in-person meeting. We listen to your circumstances, ask the questions we need to ask, and explain your options. We use Zoom, Teams, or telephone, depending on your preference. The consultation lasts up to 30 minutes. We follow up with a written summary by email and any documents we discussed.

Once you decide to proceed, we draft your documents and send them to you to read. We then arrange a follow-up call to walk through them, answer questions and adjust anything that is not quite right. When the documents are final, we provide detailed signing instructions; for Wills, this includes the witnessing requirements (two witnesses physically present together with you when you sign). Most online clients arrange witnesses locally; some travel to our Aylesham office for the signing.

The signing process

Signing online, properly.

Wills must be signed in the physical presence of two witnesses (under section 9 of the Wills Act 1837). The witnesses must be over 18, must not be beneficiaries (and must not be married to a beneficiary), and must sign in the presence of the testator and each other.

We provide a step-by-step signing guide, walk through it on a video call, and verify that the signing has been carried out correctly. For clients who would rather not arrange witnesses themselves, we can host the signing at our Aylesham office or, in some cases, refer to a local notary or solicitor to act as witnesses.

LPAs have their own certification requirements, which we handle as part of the drafting service. Sara or one of our qualified consultants signs as the Certificate Provider where appropriate.

  • Couldn't fault Sara. Expert advice, she knows what she's talking about. I checked with the Society of Will Writers who confirmed she was a member and on their advisory board.

FAQs

Common questions.

Yes. The Society of Will Writers (which regulates SLS) operates across England and Wales. Our regulation is not geographically restricted within the jurisdiction. We do not advise on Scottish or Northern Irish law, which have different legal systems.

For clients further afield who specifically want to meet in person, we are happy to discuss travel arrangements. For most matters, this is not needed. For complex matters or clients who simply prefer face-to-face, we can arrange to come to you or to meet at an agreed location.

Yes. Our published prices apply regardless of location.

Scottish property is governed by Scottish law, which has different rules. We can refer you to a Scottish solicitor for the Scottish elements; for the rest, we work alongside them.

International property is a more involved discussion. The principle of 'scripts of will' (separate Wills for assets in different jurisdictions) often applies. We work with our network of professional partners for international matters.

Yes, provided you live in England or Wales. The documents are drafted under the law of England and Wales and are valid throughout the jurisdiction.
